Protective Wear (PPE) Inspection - General

Introduction

Health care associated with infections are major problems for patients, society and health care management. The emergence of life-threatening infections such as severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and re-emerging infectious diseases like plague & tuberculosis have highlighted the need for efficient infection control programmes and capacity building in all health care.

Infection control considerably reduces patients’ disease, length of hospital stays, cost associated with hospital stay and mortality. One of the ways for prevention is use of personal protective equipment (PPE). The main objective of PPE’s is to prevent the public, environment and health care workers from the transmission of infections.

Personal protective equipment (PPE):

Personal protective equipment’s are special equipment worn to create a barrier between wearer and micro-organisms, mucous membranes, airways, skin, clothing from contact with infectious agents and exposure to hazardous environments. This shall reduce the chance of touching, being exposed to, and spreading germs. PPE’s used as part of precautions includes:

  •  Various Types of Masks
  •  Gloves
  •  Gowns/ Coverall
  •  Aprons
  •  Protective eyewear
  •  Face shields
  •  Caps/ Helmets
  •  Boots/shoe covers

Use of barriers reduces opportunities for transmission of infectious agents. PPE also protects patients from exposure to infectious agents in the surrounding environment carried by healthcare workers.

Selection:

All personal protective equipment should be designed and constructed with safety features and should be maintained with clean and reliable method. Proper fitting of personal protective equipment is important, it can make the difference between being safely covered or dangerously exposed.

Minimum requirements:

  •  Provide adequate protection against the particular hazards for which they are designed
  •  Be of safe design and construction for the work to be performed
  •  Be reasonably comfortable when worn under the designated conditions
  •  Fit snugly and not unduly interfere with the movements of the wearer
  •  Be durable and be capable of being disinfected

Selection of protective equipment is based on assessment of the risk of transmission of infectious agents to the patients or the carrier and the risk contamination of the clothing or skin of health care workers or other staff by patients’ blood, body substances, secretions or excretions. Local policies and current health and safety legislation should also be considered.

Procurement challenges:

PPE can lose its effectiveness or become damaged due to exposure to grit, dirt, chemicals, UV light, misuse. It is essential to make sure that they are fit for its purpose, in date, and fully compliant.

Procuring PPE’s of right quality, getting information on delivery of quantities and receiving timely deliveries. To assure frontline worker (Health care & others) for right quality & quantity PPE availability. Traceability of defects and rejection in case required. Access and reach to decision makers in case of any exigency or emergency. Dealing with dedicated personal in the case of high need. These are few concerns purchasers shall experience.
